New Poll Shows GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis With Sizable Lead Against Democrats

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has gotten some fantastic news after a new poll reveals he appears to be cruising towards another election win.

A new poll by Mason-Dixon Polling showed that the governor is leading his Democrat opponents by 51 percent or better, Florida Politics reported.

“According to the poll, U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist would perform the best of the three Democratic candidates if the race were today, losing 51%-43%. DeSantis would also defeat Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, 53%-42%, and Miami state Sen. Annette Taddeo, 53%-37%,” the website said.

“When matched up against his current potential Democratic challengers, DeSantis receives the support of slightly over half of Florida’s voters, and his leads provide a decent cushion at this point in the race,” the report said.

“These leads all appear to be related to (DeSantis’) name recognition advantage, although Crist is almost comparably well known,” it said.

DeSantis is recognized by 97% of voters and has a positive favorability rating. About 92% of voters say they recognize Crist, a former Governor, but more view him unfavorably than favorably. Only 67% of voters identify Fried, and 43% recognize Taddeo.

Crist, elected Governor in 2006 as a Republican and attempted to retake the Governor’s Mansion in 2014 as a Democrat, is also the front-runner in the Democratic Primary.

In head-to-heads against DeSantis, Crist would be the best-performing Democrat with Black voters. He would win that electorate 84%-7%, compared to Fried’s 79%-12% and Taddeo’s 67%-12%. Crist would also be the strongest with independents but still loses 56%-33%.

While DeSantis would win the votes of 62% or 63% of men in all three head-to-heads, Fried would be the strongest of the three Democrats among male voters, winning 35% of that electorate.

The poll had fantastic news for another Florida Republican, Sen. Marco Rubio, who is ahead of his Democrat challenger, Rep. Val Demings, News4Jax reported.

Of 625 registered Florida voters who were interviewed via telephone statewide between Feb. 7 through Feb. 10, the data shows 49% support Rubio and 42% support Demings. The remaining 9% were undecided.

The news release from Mason-Dixon notes that an incumbent running below 50% often leaves the door open for a challenger to significantly tighten the race under the right circumstances.

“Party registered voters appear to be dug in along partisan lines and recent elections suggest that pattern is likely to hold. The key for Demings to pull off an upset will be the ability to attract more unaffiliated voters,” it said.

The news comes more than a week after Gov. DeSantis vowed to investigate crowdfunding website GoFundMe.

The website seized donations that were given to the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” protesting COVID-19 regulations and initially said it would redistribute the donations to charities approved by the convoy organizers and the company, Fox News reported.

On Friday, the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe froze the convoy’s official campaign, claiming law enforcement convinced the company that the convoy had become violent and unlawful.

GoFundMe encouraged donors to submit a refund form and said that any funds not properly returned to donors would be donated to a charity chosen by the Freedom Convoy.

Within hours, however, GoFundMe walked back the refund applications, instead of announcing it would be refunding donors automatically.

This is not the first time that the company has stopped a campaign from causes that were considered “conservative” but it may be the last.

Now DeSantis and others want to investigate the company and its supposed rules.

“It is a fraud for @gofundme to commandeer $9M in donations sent to support truckers and give it to causes of their own choosing. I will work with @AGAshleyMoody to investigate these deceptive practices — these donors should be given a refund,” he said on Twitter.
